Why Group Therapy?
Those who are engaging in problematic pornography use often struggle to find the tools they need to become successful in reducing or eliminating their sexual behaviors. They often benefit from the support of a trained therapist and other men who are dealing with the same challenges. Individual therapy, couples counseling, and 12-step fellowships all have their benefits, but group therapy is a unique opportunity for men to experience tremendous growth by taking advantage of the power of relationships.
Many men find it difficult to be honest and transparent in their relationships, especially when it comes to topics such as sex, masturbation, or pornography use. Feelings of shame and guilt often drive these men into isolation, where they develop a secret life. Many of them get quite skilled at hiding their true selves. This is where group therapy can be helpful, as it provides an environment where they can break through isolation, eliminate secrecy, and move from deception to authenticity.
About This Therapy Group
This therapy group is designed for men who want to reduce or eliminate their unwanted sexual behaviors. These behaviors generally include viewing pornography and masturbation. Many men find it difficult to relate to other resources such as 12-step fellowships or sex addiction groups. This is often because their behaviors haven’t escalated beyond masturbation to pornography. They struggle “fitting in” with groups whose members behaviors have crossed into physical sexual acts with other people, such as affairs, hook-ups, or sex workers. They may also struggle with being called a “Sex Addict” and want to find a safe environment where they are not required to take a label.
Men who join this group may identify as an addict or not. How a person identifies in their recovery is a matter of personal choice and there is no requirement in this group to claim addiction. The men in this group simply own their behaviors as a problematic and want to get better.
This group’s content is based on the latest research in the field of Compulsive Sexual Behaviors and combines in-person, interactive education, self-paced homework, and supportive group interaction to help each participant thrive in their recovery. There is no need to suffer alone. Help is available.
